Serving trays with sliced sausage, smothered in a tangy red sauce and dusted with a generous amount of curry powder. French fries are served alongside.

Currywurst is typically served with french fries (Pommes frites) or a small bread roll (Brötchen) and is a beloved dish by both tourists and locals. The story goes that the recipe was created in 1949 in Berlin by Herta Heuwer, who mixed ketchup, curry powder, and other spices she received from British soldiers.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Currywurst

  • 4 pieces fresh Bratwurst or other cooked/grilling sausages
  • 2 tablespoons oil or lard for frying

Ingredients for the Curry Sauce

  • 250 ml ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Side Dishes

  • to taste french fries or bread

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sauce

In a small saucepan, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon of curry powder, paprika, chili powder, and sugar. Heat the mixture over low heat until all the flavors are well combined.

Step 2: Cook the Sausage

Heat oil or lard in a frying pan. Cook the sausages on all sides until they are golden brown and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 3: Serve

Slice the cooked sausages into bite-sized pieces. Place them on a plate (ideally with french fries) and pour the prepared curry sauce over them. Generously sprinkle with the remaining curry powder and serve immediately.
