An open white Broodje Kroket roll with two long croquettes and a squeeze of mustard.

Broodje Kroket is popular in the Netherlands as a quick lunch, especially in cafeterias and food vending machines (Febo). It is an essential comfort food.

The croquette should ooze after being sliced, confirming its creamy and hot filling. Mustard is key, as its sharpness balances the richness of the fried delicacy.

Ingredients

I. For the Broodje Kroket

  • 1 pc Croquettes (Dutch Kroketten), hot and crispy
  • 1 pc White elongated roll/bun
  • 1 to taste Mustard (Dijon or whole-grain)

Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Croquettes

Ensure you have ready-made Kroketten. If using frozen ones, deep-fry them in hot oil at 185 °C (365 °F) according to instructions (usually 6-8 minutes) until dark golden brown and crispy.

Step 2: Preparing the Roll

Take the elongated white roll and slice it lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through, so it forms a 'pocket'.

Step 3: Assembly and Serving

Place one or two hot croquettes into the roll.

Apply a generous dollop of mustard onto the croquettes.

Serve immediately. Warning: The filling is extremely hot!
