A generous serving of Tanzanian coconut rice, Wali wa Nazi, on a plate.

Wali wa Nazi is a perfect example of how simple ingredients can create something extraordinary. The rich flavor of coconut milk gives the rice a creamy texture and a wonderful aroma. This recipe is easy to make and will perfectly complement any main dish with a sauce.

Ingredients

For Wali wa Nazi

  • 2 cups long-grain rice (e.g., Basmati)
  • 1 can (400 ml) full-fat coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Step 1: Rice preparation

Rinse the rice thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear. This step is important to remove excess starch.

Krok 2: Cooking the rice

In a medium-sized pot, combine the rinsed rice, coconut milk, water, and salt. Stir well.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to a low simmer and cover the pot tightly with a lid.

Step 3: Finishing the cooking

Cook without stirring for about 20-25 minutes, until the rice has absorbed all the liquid. The rice should be soft and fluffy. If not, add a little more hot water and simmer for another 5 minutes.

Step 4: Serving

Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, still covered, for another 5 minutes. Then gently fluff it with a fork and serve warm.
