Ukraine, a country with vast fertile plains, is often called the “breadbasket of Europe.” Its culture and national identity are firmly connected to the land and strong historical traditions. From the golden domes of Kyiv to the green Carpathian Mountains, Ukrainian hospitality and love for family gatherings are reflected in its hearty and sincere cuisine.

Ukrainian cuisine is the embodiment of comfort and nourishment. The absolute king of meals is Borscht, a thick beetroot soup that varies in recipe across every region but is always served with sour cream (smetana). Culinary icons also include varenyky (stuffed dumplings, often with potatoes, cabbage, or cherries), which are a source of Ukrainian national pride. Other popular dishes include holubtsi (stuffed cabbage rolls) and pyrizhky (small baked or fried filled buns). Essential to the cuisine is the abundant use of dill, which is added to most savory dishes, and salo (cured pork fat), a traditional delicacy.
