Uruguay
Discover the Rich Flavors and Traditions of Uruguayan Cuisine!
Uruguay, a small but proud country nestled between two South American giants, Argentina and Brazil, is known for its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and especially its cattle farming. Uruguay has maintained a strong European character, which is evident in its culture, architecture, and above all, its cuisine, where Italian and Spanish influences dominate. It is a place where sharing maté and gatherings around the parrilla (barbecue) are a part of the national identity.
Uruguayan cuisine is a celebration of simplicity and quality. Beef is absolutely dominant, with the national dish, asado (grilled meat), considered a culinary ritual. Other popular dishes include chivito (a massive sandwich featuring a thin slice of beef, ham, cheese, egg, and mayonnaise) and milanesa (thin, breaded, and fried meat, similar to a schnitzel). The Italian influence is clear in the popularity of pasta and dishes like ñoquis (gnocchi). No Uruguayan meal, however, is complete without dulce de leche, a thick caramel cream used in countless desserts.
